Craig Robison: Chair

It has been my privilege since 2021 to chair Wheal Velocity cycling club

Diversity and opportunity are my guiding principles and I am extremely proud that over the last few years we have been able to grow our club to become truly representative across age, gender, ability and cycling disciplines! Two huge measure of success in this area are that this year the WVRT Racing Team is 50/50 boys and girls, and that we now have adult riders regularly competing in the WV jersey in regional and national level competition!

Cycling for me has been a constant throughout life. As a youngster growing up in Cornwall, the bike represented freedom to go anywhere and do anything, truth be known it still does! These days I can mostly be found either at the club, racing cyclocross or XC around the South West, or touring the paradise for road cycling that is Cornwall with my 70 year old dad and 10 year old son, where every mile is a memory for life!

Cycling is truly a sport for everyone and I want our club to be a place where anyone and everyone has the opportunity to live their best life on two wheels. Don’t be shy! I have always got an open mind for new ideas and will always welcome new people into the club, just don’t stand still for too long because otherwise I will talk you into helping out

Jeannie Thurston-O'Dell
Club Secretary & Lead Race Organiser

I came into the Club in 2021 courtesy of my children falling in love with cycling and finding the friendship and support of the other riders at Wheal Velocity. It was only a short matter of time after joining that other members of the committee had to move away and so I felt it important to step up and contribute to the running of the club so that it would continue to be available for my children and others in the future.

I don’t have a background in cycling, rather my skill set lies in effective and robust administration and organisation, therefore I would describe my role as being ‘The person who has to make it all work!’ This undoubtedly depends on the rest of the team to make sure that I have the information needed to do a good job on behalf of the club, so if I ever pester you to do something you know why! Lately, I have been doing more on the bike and in 2023 with the support of our fabulous coaches, I completed my first ever race – a super muddy and technical cyclocross!

My Race Organisation role is to coordinate all of the club’s own racing activities across the 3 disciplines, Road, Mountain Bike Cross Country (MTB XC) and Cyclocross (CX). This starts at Christmas with the negotiations for setting dates the following year for all of our races. I then work with the rest of the club and committee to deal with the administrative aspects of setting the races up and most importantly securing the volunteers needed to run the races each year. On race days, I manage the electronic scoring system and results. Following the races, I deal with the processing of the results and updating the various stakeholders (leagues, publications, and partners). It’s definitely a busy role and one for which I am always looking out for volunteers to help out with!

My other voluntary roles in the wider community are as a member of Cornwall Cyclocross, a group set up to support and improve access to cyclocross racing in Cornwall and as a Trustee of a local Charity, Rest With Joseph and Friends.

Stuart Harris: Treasurer & MTB Coach

I got into cycling when I was 23 years old and started to race a year later and got hooked on Cyclocross. As time went on my first born Brody caught the cycling bug and started to race from age three. Along with raising a family and many knee operations, four in total, my racing took a side line until 2021 when I started MTB XC racing a little and competed in my 1st full series in 2022. In 2023 won my 1st ever South West Cross Country (SWCX) series !

I became a part of Wheal Velocity committee by accident! Brody and Mia, my children, have been coached here for sometime but it was not until 2022 when Chairman Craig approached me about Wheal Velocity's ambitions, a new MTB XC course on site. With my past offroad racing experience Craig asked me for some advice about what an MTB XC course should be like. Within a few months I became an integral part of the course building. This helped us achieve the 1st ever onsite MTB XC race in 2022. We were delighted with a great number of riders entering this first race, 160+, I further stepped up and now also help with MTB coaching and have become the clubs treasurer.

My aim is to bring the regional MTB XC champs to Wheal Velocity in 2025.

I remain a member of WarVena Racing team and we have now interlinked the 2 clubs with supporting each other in offroad adventures.
